Poem from the forthcoming Mara Tk 7”
Feb 1st
Taniwhunk is a form of Maori music. A term coined in order to claim a small part of this vast musical universe for ourselves, lest we continually be labeled the borrower. The Maori of 2010 exist in the most technologically advanced era yet. Thus we are afforded the potential to express our mana with ever greater resources, definition and distribution. The following prose (brose) may put that thought a little better:
Maori in Space
They used to call Canterbury,
The food-baskets of Waitaha
Now at 4:35am the piggy-bank broke
And all that spilled out was a dehydrated muck, rations
For this Maori in Space
My great-grandfather was the last fisherman of our line to catch Barracuda
Beyond the foreshore or the for sure, out in pure space
His son was a Civil Engineer, like Hone Tuwhare –
Boilermakers they called themselves
I call myself a Maori in Space…

Mara Tk – The Latest
Feb 1st
Mara TK is a Maori. He inhabits a far corner of the globe: leftfield and down a bit to 41 degrees of latitude – Aotearoa (New Zealand). His tools are the electric and bass guitars, beat machines and the human voice. He is blessed to have broken bread with the likes of Ommas Keith, Muhsinah, Jake One, Julien Dyne and Wild Bill Ricketts. But it his seminal group Electric Wire Hustle that bears his greatest body of works so far. Signed to BBE in 2010, EWH will release their self-titled album worldwide. A solo E.P is cookin as we speak.
